Favors are perhaps one of the most raw and human of our traits. We help friends and strangers all the time, giving some of our time and resources to better them. In modern times, we’ve come to expect reciprocation of favors – you do something for me, I’ll do something for you. We’re disappointed when it doesn’t happen.
We tell our children to not expect people to do nice things with out asking politely. So why have we as adults forgotten this simple rule?
If you need a favor from someone, ask them. If they say no, award them for their consideration with a ‘thank you’. A sincere one is best. We shouldn’t be afraid to ask. We shouldn’t be afraid to say no.
On the same token, don’t be afraid to say ‘yes’ either.
